About the SLP

About the SLP

Hi, I’m Andrea “Annie” Hitchman, M.S., CCC-SLP, and I’m the owner of Surmount Speech Therapy. I earned my bachelor’s degree from The Ohio State University in 2016 and my master’s degree from the University of Central Missouri in 2022. After graduation, I completed my clinical fellowship year at Western Missouri Medical Center and was awarded the Certificate of Clinical Competence by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. I currently hold licensure through the State of Ohio Speech and Hearing Professionals Board.

I practice in Mount Vernon, Ohio, where I specialize in treating phonological disorders—specifically dyslexia. Over the past two years, I’ve had the privilege of learning from some of the most knowledgeable dyslexia therapists. I’ve completed 30 hours of comprehensive training in the Orton-Gillingham method of literacy instruction, received one-on-one mentorship in evaluating and diagnosing dyslexia, and hold membership in the International Dyslexia Association.

I use evidence-based methods of literacy instruction to help individuals with dyslexia build confidence in reading, writing, and spelling. Currently, I offer comprehensive dyslexia diagnostic evaluations and individualized treatment sessions.

Approach

About the SLP

Approach

Annie uses the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education's (IMSE) Orton-Gillingham approach, which currently holds  Accreditation Plus through the International Dyslexia Association (IDA). This curriculum is an evidence-based method of literacy instruction to give those with dyslexia confidence in their reading, writing, and spelling.

 Our structured literacy intervention is:

  • Systematic and cumulative - explains each small element as a part of a bigger picture. Skilled instruction follows a sequence which moves from easier to more difficult concepts.

  • Explicit - each concept is explained directly and clearly. Concepts become a part of a routine with high repetition.

  • Hands-on and Engaging - learning that uses a multi-sensory approach incorporating all learning pathways: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic/tactile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach me at andreahitchman@surmountspeechtherapy.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Call or text (419) 408-3833 or email andreahitchman@surmountspeechtherapy.com to set up a free consultation! You will be asked a variety of questions about your child’s current difficulties to determine if an evaluation is warranted.

I work with both children and adults! My area of interest is phonological disorders and dyslexia so I mostly work with individuals ages 4 and up.

I currently offer comprehensive evaluations and treatment for speech sound disorders, receptive and expressive language, and dyslexia/literacy.

I am not in-network with any insurance companies at this time; however, I am able to generate what is called a superbill that you can submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement.

A superbill is a detailed receipt that a healthcare provider gives to a patient after

they’ve received services, like a speech evaluation. It lists the medical treatments

or services provided, along with the costs and codes that describe what was

done. Patients can use a superbill to submit to their insurance company for

reimbursement or to apply toward their deductible. Think of it as a “proof of

service” for insurance purposes. I recommend reaching out to your insurance

company to see if they will reimburse you for speech and language therapy

services.

I accept cash, check, credit/debit cards, as well as HSA/FSA cards.

Because treatment is very hands-on and multisensory, treatment is only offered

in person at this time. Because the individuals that I serve have difficulty

processing speech sounds, we cannot take the chance that our devices and

video will always provide the best audio and visuals.
